The Games I’m Playing This Thanksgiving

Let’s face it, we’re rolling through a mediocre holiday lead-in for video gaming. Rock Band 3, Halo: Reach, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Fable III, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Fallout: New Vegas, DJ Hero 2, GoldenEye 007, Civilization 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops. All sequels (or remakes) warmed over. Monuments to that-thing-you-did-years-ago. Yesterday’s games in disguise. [...]

Why Games for Windows Marketplace and Not Steam?

Microsoft’s Games for Windows brand undergoes its latest makeover on November 15, but it’s already had several, none of which culminated in the successes of its console analogue. Games for Windows simply feels emasculated next to Xbox Live, and it’s an even tougher comparison when you look at the other Windows gaming storefronts. [...]

Atari 2600 Teardown: What’s Inside Your Old Console?

When the Atari 2600 came out in 1977, it revolutionized gaming by popularizing the use of game cartridges and microprocessor-based hardware. No longer were all of a console’s games built into the system–you could now buy third-party games on ROM chips housed in cartridges and play more than just Pong! [...]

Online game aims to educate Americans on the national debt

With the country trillions of dollars in the red during a down economic period, paying off the national debt may not high on the priority list for many Americans. It is something that has to be tackled, however, and education on what sacrifices may be necessary to turn the country’s financial standing around may be key in the process. An online game called U.O.Me was awarded the “Most Likely to Succeed” award at last week’s Games for Change conference held in New York City. [...]

Games for Windows Live Adds ‘Games on Demand’ Downloads

I feel bad for Microsoft’s Games for Windows, a really great idea that for one reason or another has yet to blossom. I’ve previously grumped about it here and here, so I’ll summarize: Launched in May 2007 with the Windows version of Halo 2, just 29 official LIVE-enabled titles since, and dozens more GFW-branded games that have Xbox 360 analogues, but no corresponding Games for Windows LIVE support, thus: No GFW-based matchmaking, achievements, and gamertag tracking. Classics remade: Qix on XBLA, Rayman on DSi this week

Long before the Rabbids hijacked the company’s games, Ubisoft had a different platforming mascot. Netflix on PS3: The Great Sony-Microsoft Equalizer?

Surprising no one, really, streaming video maven Netflix will roll out its online TV and movie rental service to North America’s nearly 10 million PlayStation 3 owners in November. Hey Microsoft, We Need More Games For Windows!

I want to like Microsoft’s Games for Windows. The application costs me nothing. It has a sleek ice-blue overlay that’s visually elegant and less obtrusive than Steam’s “default on” pop-up dialogue boxes. It consolidates my Windows and Xbox game accounts and lets me access services folded in to augment demonstrative, supplemental, and social content. It’s a one-stop shop for updates, downloads, and topical news. [...]
